Begin by singing Raffi’s Shake My Sillies Out.
Book – Jennifer Jones Won’t Leave Me Alone by Frieda Wishinsky; illustrated by Neal Layton.
Poem – Chocolates, by Jack Prelutsky. We used a heart-shaped box of chocolates with empty wrappers inside and a puppet to recite the poem. It was very funny.
Book – Never Too Little to Love by Jeanne Willis; illustrated by Jan Fearnley.
Poem – Love, from the Susan Pearson book, Squeal and Squawk. I made some paper cut-outs which can be used on a magnetic chalkboard to help tell this poem.
Song – Bushel and a Peck, from the VeggieTales CD, Junior’s Bedtime Songs.
Book/Puppet Show – I’ll Give You Kisses by Diane Paterson. We used an old lady puppet and a boy puppet without a mouth to tell this story. I made a “frown” along with a “smile,” which we switched on the boy during the story.
Poem – The Love Bug
It begins with a grin (smile)
It turns to a giggle (put both hands on mouth and giggle)
You start to laugh (throw head back and laugh out loud)
You look all around for someone to hug (move eyes back and forth)
You've caught the love bug (hug another child or yourself)
Achoo!
Book/Song – The Ballad of Valentine by Alison Jackson; illustrated by Tricia Tusa. Instead of reading this story, I sang it.
Book/Puppets – Love and Kisses by Sarah Wilson; illustrated by Melissa Sweet. We used animal puppets to act out the kissing in place of the actual book. This was also a big hit.
Activity – Elizabeth brought in valentines which we let the children fill out with their own names. They then put the valentines into envelopes and we asked their moms and dads to write the children’s names and addresses on them. They needed to make sure not to seal the envelopes. After everybody left, Elizabeth and I each put in one of our own valentines and then sealed the envelopes and put them in the mail. Each child should be getting an envelope in the mail prior to Valentine’s Day, which has their own valentine as well as one from Elizabeth and me.
