Prior to storytime we dressed up in complete bee attire.
Begin by singing Raffi’s Shake
My Sillies Out.
Book: Big Bug Surprise by Julian Gran.
Song: A Bee is on Your Nose. We passed out
black and yellow feathers, which
we pretended were bees that landed on different parts of our
bodies.
A bee is on
your nose.
A bee is on
your nose.
Hi ho just
watch me blow
A bee is on your nose.
(Repeat the
song using different body parts.)
Jokes: We used
puppets to tell a number of bee jokes.
Book: Buzz, said the Bee by Wendy Cheyette Lewison; illustrated by Hans Wilhelm. (We have flannel board pieces for this.)
Activity: Bee School. We taught the children how to
become real bees while we listened to the song “Buzz Buzz Buzz,” from the Geof
Johnson cd, Animal Sounds. The kids learned
how to buzz, fly, look for flowers, land (hover & jump), collect pollen,
and sting (dive & pinch).
Book: Gotcha! by Gail Jorgensen; illustrated
by Kerry Argent. (We used a bear puppet, bee, and fly swatter along with the
actual book.)
Story: Ouch! by Paul Musser. We used several
animal puppets to tell this story.
Jokes: We told
additional zany bee jokes.
Puppet Show: Grizzy and the Bumble-Bee by Joy Cowley;
illustrated by Jan van der Voo.
Final Activity:
We passed out bee hats and kazoos and had the children hum and fly along to Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee.
