Magic, September 21st and 22nd, 2011

Begin by singing Raffi’s Shake My Sillies Out.

Book: Waking Beauty by Leah Wilcox; illustrated by Lydia Monks.

Poem: Hat Trick by Deanna Romriell.

            Magic! Magic! In my hat,
            I’ll pull out a rabbit –
            Aaaaaa!! What is that?!!
            (Pull anything other than a
             rabbit out and repeat.)

            Magic! Magic! In my hat,
            I’ll pull out a rabbit –
            See!! Look at that!!

Book: Where is Kazam? from the book, Kazam’s Magic by Amy Ehrlich; illustrated by Barney Saltzberg. We made paper cut-outs, which can be used on a magnetic chalkboard in place of the actual book.)

Activity: Poof! we took turns pointing our “magic wands” at each other and the audience and saying, “Abracadabra, poof!  You’re a _____________!” (Some of the things we turned each other into included an ogre, lion, tree, monkey, rock, and happy children enjoying storytime.)

Book: The Magic Hat by Mem Fox; illustrated by Tricia Tusa.

Rhyme: Scat the Cat.

Book: Mr. Merlin and the TURTLE by Seymour Chwast.

Final Activity: We performed a real-life magic show for the kids!  The magic tricks included:  Hyrum the Haunted Hanky, Penetration Frame, Magic Ball and Vase, and Nickel and Dime Switch.  We also taught the kids how to make their finger disappear from one hand and appear on the other.  After the magic show, we passed “magic wands” out to the children as we sprinkled “magical fairy dust” (silver glitter) on them.  While we did this, we played the song, Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo from the cd, Classic Disney. Volume 2: 60 Years of Musical Magic.
