Begin by singing Raffi’s “Shake My Sillies Out.”
Book – Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes.
Story – “Ernie and the Nighttime Noises,” from the book Bert and Ernie Go Camping
by Ernie Kwiat. (We used puppets, an overhead projector, and
transparencies showing the silhouettes of the various nighttime noises,
in place of the actual book.)
Book – Let’s Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy by Jan Thomas. (We
used a cow puppet and Deanna’s cowboy to help tell this story along with the actual book.)
Song – “The Wiggy Wiggles Freeze Dance,” from the Hap Palmer cd, Two
Little Sounds: Fun with Phonics and Numbers. (We gave the children
streamers and had the children freeze every time we turned off the lights and the music stopped.)
Book – There’s a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer. (I told this story
using the overhead projector and shadow puppets.)
Song – “Last Night I Had a Dream,” from the Laurie Berkner cd, Whaddaya
Think of That?
Book – In a Dark, Dark Wood: An Old Tale with a Twist by David A. Carter.
(We
used a ghost puppet at the end of the book, instead of the book’s
pop-up version. This was a good substitution. After the ghost popped
out, he told a couple Halloween jokes.)
Final Activity - We placed the overhead projector behind our white screen and
then
made a number of shadows with our hands that the kids had to guess (we
got ideas from the book, Me and My Shadows by Elizabeth Adams.) When we
were finished, we let the kids come up and take turns making their own
shadow puppets.
