Things That Start with M, March 24th and 25th, 2010


(At the beginning of storytime we put the letter “M” on the Story Room wall. Before reading each story, we introduced our next “M” word and taped it to the wall.)

Begin by singing Raffi’s Shake My Sillies Out

Book: (MOUSE) The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear
by Don and Audrey Wood

Song: Little Mouse Creeping, from the compact disc, Circle Time: Songs & Rhymes for the Very Young

Book: (MOUTH) The Wide-Mouthed Frog: A Pop-up Book by Keith Faulkner;
illustrated by Jonathan Lambert

Rhyme: (MOON) Blast Off! by Cynthia Holley.

Jump into your spacesuit,
Don’t forget your hat. (Imitate putting on suit and helmet.)
Climb into the rocket ship
On the launching mat. (Climb in, sit down.)
Buckle up for take off,
Belts from head to toe. (Buckle up!)
Countdown from ten and blast off,
Up to the moon we go!
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . . . . Blast off!

Song/Book: (MOTHER) Down by the Bay by Raffi; illustrated by Nadine Bernard
Westcott. (We used a “mother puppet” to help sing along with the book.)

Book: (MONKEY & ME) Monkey and Me by Emily Gravett


Rhyme: (MAGIC) – Hat Trick by Deanna Romriell. (We used a cool top
hat with rabbit inside puppet along with a selection of other animals to perform this rhyme. In order to finally pull a rabbit out of the hat, we had the children help us say the magic words. This was a nice touch.

Magic! Magic! In my hat,
I’ll pull out a rabbit –
Aaaaaa!! What is that?!!
(Pull anything other than a rabbit out and repeat.)
