Hibernation, Sunday Storytime

Begin by singing Raffi’s “Shake My Sillies Out”

Book: Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit by Il Sung Na

Song: "This is the Way We Get Ready for Winter"
This is the way we gather our food, gather our food, gather our food. (Hands gather imaginary food)
This is the way we gather our food
When the air turns colder.

This is the way we dig a hole, dig a hole, dig a hole. (Use hands to dig a hole)
This is the way we dig a hole,
When the air turns colder.

This is the way we build a nest, build a nest, build a nest. (Build an imaginary nest)
This is the way we build a nest,
When the air turns colder.

This is the way we eat our food, eat our food, eat our food. (Put hands near mouth and pretend to eat food)
This is the way we eat our food,
When the air turns colder.

This is the way we hibernate, hibernate, hibernate. (Put hands near head in a sleeping gesture)
This is the way we hibernate,
When the air turns colder.

Book: Hibernation Station by Michelle Meadows

Rhyme: Winter is Cold
Winter is cold (hug yourself and shiver)
There is snow in the sky (flutter fingers above your head)
The squirrel gathers nuts (pretend to gather nuts)
And the wild geese fly (flap arms)
The fluffy red fox (cup hands over head to form ears)
Has his fur to keep warm (stroke arms as if stroking fur)
The bear's in her cave (form a cave shape with your arms)
Sleeping all through the storm (Fold hands under cheek and pretend to sleep)

Book: Old Bear by Kevin Henkes

Activity: The Bear
Here is a cave, (make a fist)
Inside is a bear. (put a thumb inside fist)
Now he comes out to get some fresh air. (pop out thumb)

He stays out all summer in sunshine and heat.
He hunts in the forest for berries to eat. (move thumb in circle)

When snow starts to fall he hurries inside his warm little cave and there he will hide. (put thumb back inside fist)

Snow covers the cave like a fluffy white rug.
Inside the bear sleeps all cozy and snug. (Cover fist with other hand)

Flannel Board: Storyboard Animals I made little animal cut outs and cut outs of their homes. The kids got to come up and put the animals on their corresponding homes.

Final Activity: Hibernation Craft
