Cars, May 16th and 17th, 2012

Begin by singing Raffi’s Shake My Sillies Out.

Book: Who is Driving? by Leo Timmers.

Song: The Fast Cars Drove All Around. We made pictures, which can be used on the magnetic chalkboard.

Poem: Signals from the Shel Silverstein book A Light in the
Attic.  We used a flannel board traffic light. We had the children do actions corresponding with each color of the traffic light. We did this poem twice.

Book: Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems.

Song: The Wheels on the Bus. We used puppets with moveable hands/arms to help sing this song.

Book: The Bridge Is Up! by Babs Bell; illustrated by Rob Hefferan.

Poem: Car Sounds. We made pictures of several different kinds of cars, which we used on the magnetic chalkboard to help tell this rhyme.

Book: In the Driver’s Seat by Max Haynes. We turned this into a story that can be used on the overhead projector. Think of an old-fashioned video game with really slow-moving graphics.  Prior to reading this story, we gave each child a paper plate steering wheel. One librarian read the story while the other changed the pictures on the overhead projector.

Activity: The children used their steering wheels and pretended to drive while we sang the song Drivin’ in My Car from the compact disc, Ralph’s World.
